May 2003

Mayday holiday today. I'm here at home continuing to learn ASP. Should be outside soaking up the sun?... or should I?

Nick Cripps has just been in touch with a demo single his daughter Lucy has just made. He sent it to me attached to an email and I've just been listening to it. It's fantastic. I wonder if he would let me put it up here on this diary page so that you can all have a listen

If you are online the same time as me, have a chat!

Well the captions for the picture of Ben in last month's diary have been flooding in :-; .... After hours of deliberation here are the top three.

  1. [Mom] "Guess who made that outfit for him?"
  2. [Mark McCabe] "Clear and refreshing!  Hey, that reminds me: where's that kid with my beer?"
  3. [My Sister] "These are the best water divining twigs I've found in ages!"

Sorry to all the rest of you who spent hours dreaming up captions but as you can see the standard was extremely high!

Five years ago, I was writing this diary while I was in Singapore... In May I'd just taken the editor's chair back from Andy Quinton who'd set unmatchable standards. I've just noticed that the Singapore diaries have had over twenty thousand views to date... wow.

I've just been listening to Jonathon Woss on BBC Internet radio but am about to swtch over to Nick's suggestion:

"This is my favourite radio station at the moment. I listen in the mornings, but especially the weekends. Try it out!   http://www.classicgold.musicradio.com/index.shtml"

My sister's just asked me two questions: 1. Why is junk email called spam? 2. Will you be Ben's Godfather?

I know the answer to the easy question but why is junk email called spam?

Just to prove that I haven't been abducted by aliens and wrote all this drivel sometime last month, automating it so that it would magically pop up on your screens periodically giving the impression that I was still here, phew that was  a long sentence:

Here's an unmistakable picture of me reading today's Times:

It's a new service I've just subscribed to. For a slightly inflated price you can receive today's papers (from many places in the world) printed and delivered. So on Fridays I'm able to read the London Times before folk back home have got up! In reality it takes me the whole of the weekend to read it, that's why I only take one paper a week.

It's another national holiday today (15th May) and a good change to veg out with my bad knee (Early stages of arthritis I think). Busy weekend planned with a party, trip to the beach and a theatre evening so I'm saving my energy.

last night I went to Patpong but you'll never guess what for! My Mom sent me on an errand! It's true, her friend has come back from a Thai holiday with a suitcase full of cheap clothes from Patpong night market. Last night I was there, amid all the nightlife, on my mobile phone as Mom selected the colours she wanted from my descriptions of blouses!... Had to be seen to be believed.

And still the captions come:

"My contacts are in here somewhere!"
Love and Best Wishes Deepo, Ranjit and baby Pavan.

Winners of the mashed potato making competition (Don't ask!)
From left to right, First place, second place, third place.

Weekend by the beach again.
far too lazy to get up off my back and take a picture so...

... I lay on my back and took a picture.

Just received from Richard Powell:

When he was in Thailand he was the Jolly Buddha, In England he's Shrek! Yes it's greeny by name and Greeny by nature.

Just received from Shep:

"Have a look at http://cyberglass.co.uk/FlashEx/mindreader.html

Clever stuff!"

"Wolves tickets for Monday's historic game against Sheffield United are changing hands for upwards of £200, an Express & Star investigation can reveal today."

Exciting stuff: If they win I'll seriously consider taking up football fanning!
