IB Analysis and Approaches

A group of 12 children includes one pair of brothers, Andy and Archie, and one pair of sisters, Bally and Binda.

The children are to be seated in a small, private cinema containing 12 seats which are arranged in two rows of six as shown in the following image.

Andy and Archie must be seated next to each other in the same row.

(a) Find the total number of ways the children can be seated.

After an argument, Bally and Binda must not be seated next to each other. Andy and Archie must still be seated next to each other.

(b) Find the total number of ways the children can be seated.
