Eventually. Then they went on for soup. Silly weren't they? Poor old certain had made it. Disaster struck. The great monsoon broke out at a startling return. So after soup the whole troop, including the lazy organisers, walked home. They arrived at 01:30 hours on 22nd November and, suffering from the effects of the soup, went to sleep.
In the morning everybody cooked their own breakfast before heading for home. A few people stayed to play on the pool table. A. Peek.
Visit To Birmingham Airport Meteorology Office
22 November 1980.
Early on Saturday afternoon I walked into the car park where I found a few young Scouts waiting to start on this intrepid visit. After a few minutes Neil and a few other Scouts arrived in a minibus which we had hired for the day. We all jumped in and luckily there was a place for everyone, so we chugged down the motorway and, without much trouble, we arrived at Birmingham Airport where after about ten minutes or so we actually found the office.
We walked in and found that nobody seemed to know much about our arrival. After a couple of telephone calls one man started to give us a brief talk, which was interrupted by a second man who carried an array of charts and giving us a brief history of weather. We soon moved into another office where the sound of machines drowned the man's voice. Some of the Scouts seemed more interested in watching aeroplanes landing and taking off, but we battled on.
After this part of the talk we went back to the minibus, where we gave the man a lift over to the other side of the airport. This was the more interesting side of the visit. First we were shown into an office where a young woman kept on typing lots of readings. We then went outside where the actual machines were. We were shown a maximum and minimum thermometer, a normal thermometer, a rain gauge, a ground thermometer, a wind speed measurer and a sunshine recorder machine.
We were by now anxious to get away so we left leaving only our thanks. We chugged back down the motorway and then started to drop people off.
