Christmas Visit To Benton House

Tuesday, 23rd December 1980

Most of the Scouts met at the Scout H.Q. and some made their own way there. On arriving at the home we all met at the car park. We went into the main room and we were made very welcome by the children and the staff. Parents had also been invited to join with us.

We started the evening with singing some camp fire songs. We also played some games. In the one sing-a-long some of the parents played mouth organs. There was a Jew's harp, a whistle and a boy with cocktail sticks that was used as shaker. One side of the room sang "It's a long way to Tipperary" and the other side sang "Pack up your troubles". In another game number one sent Kim out of the room and we played "The Mooing" game, but it all went wrong when we should have been silent and only Kim, who was supposed to moo, was not paying attention, so the game went hay wire.

The leaders and Venture Scouts did some sketches. They were very funny and the children got really involved. The home was looking very festive with decorations and a large Christmas tree.

Half way through the evening the staff had prepared some refreshment. There were sausage sandwiches and squash and best baked potatoes, but they weren't quite cooked, so we sang a few carols while we were waiting for them. We sang "O Little Town Of Bethlehem", "Away in a Manger", "In the Bleak Mid Winter", "Hark the Herald Angel" and "O come all ye faithful". We were singing one of the carols to the tune of another. It did sound funny because we ran out of tune before the last two lines.

After the carols we had the baked potatoes and we finished the evening off with Auld Lang Syne. Then it was time to go. I think we would have liked to stay longer, everyone had such a good time. Ian Walters.
