Younger Scouts Youth Hostelling Trip at Shrewsbury
4th May '81
The troop met at Railway Drive at 10:30am. I was there first at 10:05, then No. 1 and Andy Bates arrived. No. 1 went to ask what time the bus left. It went at 10:35. Stuart Farley, Peter Cheese and Robert Cunningham arrived just before the bus came. When the bus came we had one person missing. It was Ian Walters. We were about to get on the bus and a new boy came named John. We got on the bus and sat on the back seat.
Then No. 1 gave me eight Midlands red bus tickets. Then we played top trumps. I beat John and Robert. We got off the bus somewhere by Wroxeter. Then we walked to Rowley's Museum for our dinner. When we got there we looked around the Roman Village. At about 12:30pm we had our lunch. Robert ate a ham cob, then a yoghurt, then he ate another cob. All of us were laughing our heads off.
After lunch we bought some souvenirs. After that we had to split into three groups. I was with Stuart Farley. We went first up to the A5. Then it was Peter Cheese and Robert Cunningham. They went up to the River Severn, then John and Ian Walters. This went on till we got to the youth hostel. We arrived at 4:55pm. It did not open till 5:00pm so we changed our boots into our pumps.
When we got in we made our beds. I was on top and No. 1 was on the bottom of the bunk bed. After that we did our Hiketent badge. When Neal arrived we did the tea: pork chops, potatoes, carrot, sweetcorn, gravy, and for pudding sliced peaches with custard and a cup of tea.
