Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5 Level 6 Level 7 Level 8 Level 9 Exam Menu Help

This is level 9, Quadratic Inequalities. For each inequality can you find the range of values for x which makes the statement true. The first two questions have been done for you so that you can see the format your answers must be in for the computer to mark them correct.

\( x^2 + 6x + 8\lt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( x^2 − 7x + 10\gt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( x^2 − 7x + 10\gt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( 2x^2 − 23x + 45\gt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( -2x^2 + 9x + 18\lt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( 2x^2 − 11x + 5\gt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( 4x^2 − 14x + 12\gt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( -20x^2 + 11x + 3\gt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( 10x^2 + 11x + 3\gt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( x^2 + 5x \lt 6 \)

Correct Wrong

\( 5x − x^2 \gt 6 \)

Correct Wrong

\( x^2 \lt 6x \)

Correct Wrong

\( 2x^2 \gt 17x − 21 \)

Correct Wrong

\( 2x^2 + 1x \lt 3 \)

Correct Wrong

\( 2x^2 \lt 17x − 30 \)

Correct Wrong

\( 2x^2 \lt 9(x + 2) \)

Correct Wrong

\( (2x + 5)(2 − x) − 4 \lt 0 \)

Correct Wrong

\( x + 4 \lt \frac{21}{x} \)

Instructions

Try your best to answer the questions above. Type your answers into the boxes provided leaving no spaces. As you work through the exercise regularly click the "check" button. If you have any wrong answers, do your best to do corrections but if there is anything you don't understand, please ask your teacher for help.

When you have got all of the questions correct you may want to print out this page and paste it into your exercise book. If you keep your work in an ePortfolio you could take a screen shot of your answers and paste that into your Maths file.

Why am I learning this?

Mathematicians are not the people who find Maths easy; they are the people who enjoy how mystifying, puzzling and hard it is. Are you a mathematician?

Comment recorded on the 9 April 'Starter of the Day' page by Jan, South Canterbury:

"Thank you for sharing such a great resource. I was about to try and get together a bank of starters but time is always required elsewhere, so thank you."

Comment recorded on the 12 July 'Starter of the Day' page by Miss J Key, Farlingaye High School, Suffolk:

"Thanks very much for this one. We developed it into a whole lesson and I borrowed some hats from the drama department to add to the fun!"

Each month a newsletter is published containing details of the new additions to the Transum website and a new puzzle of the month.

The newsletter is then duplicated as a podcast which is available on the major delivery networks. You can listen to the podcast while you are commuting, exercising or relaxing.

Transum breaking news is available on Twitter @Transum and if that's not enough there is also a Transum Facebook page.

Go Maths

Learning and understanding Mathematics, at every level, requires learner engagement. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. Sometimes traditional teaching fails to actively involve students. One way to address the problem is through the use of interactive activities and this web site provides many of those. The Go Maths page is an alphabetical list of free activities designed for students in Secondary/High school.

Hints

Rearrange the inequality so that all of the terms are on the left of the inequality sign and zero is on the right.

Sketch the graph of the function on the left of the inequality sign.

Determine the roots of the function you have sketched by solving the quadratic.

Use your sketch (and the roots) to determine the format of the answer.

Don't wait until you have finished the exercise before you click on the 'Check' button. Click it often as you work through the questions to see if you are answering them correctly. You can double-click the 'Check' button to make it float at the bottom of your screen.
