  • That was a very enjoyable thing to do and the bugs were fandabydosie.
  • Jacqueline Miley, Birmingham
  •
  • Ew! liked the idea, but would rather they were catterpillars turning into butterflies!
  • Mr Shrum, Plum School
  •
  • Hello, My School left it on for over 1 week, We had no screen at all and there was just white! We left it a bit longer and the maggots died? Was that suppose to happen? Anyway, I am a teacher of year 2, My class did everything! Beat that!

  • Transum,
  •
  • The intention is to have the starters provide variety to the beginning of the lesson and this one certainly is something different. Let's hope that it captured the attention of your pupils and the maggots didn't distract them for doing the mathematics. It you really don't like the grubs you can click the freeze button on your projector remote control before they appear.
  • Primary 7, West Linton PS
  •
  • This is a brilliant starter. Love the BUGS!!!! #yolo.
  • Andy App, BPS
  •
  • Love the starter but any way you can make it so we can add our own calculation?
My Year 2 class would love to be up against maggots, but the calculations on at the moment are a bit tough for them :)
    Cheers.

[Transum: Certainly, just scroll down this page a little further to see a place to change the questions. Let me know if that solves your problem Andy.]

Here is an optional printable 'worksheet' for pupils to write on for this activity. It is not necessary but helps provide focus for some children. Pupils should be encouraged to do any required written working in their exercise book or on another sheet of paper.

Note to teacher: Doing this activity once with a class helps students develop strategies. It is only when they do this activity a second time that they will have the opportunity to practise those strategies. That is when the learning is consolidated.

Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Laptops In Lessons

Here is the URL which will take them to Beat The Clock, a similar student activity.
