This activity is about creating what appear to be curves from straight lines.
A search in Wikipedia for 'Curve Stitching' redirects to a page on 'String Art', otherwise known as 'Pin and Thread Art', characterized by an arrangement of coloured thread strung between points to form geometric patterns.
I remember doing curve stitching at my Primary school. First we would punch small holes in patterns in card then we would join up the holed with coloured wool to make similar patterns to those in this online activity. Our finished designs could be used as greeting cards, calendar images or framed pictures for relatives and friends.
Wikipedia goes on to say that String art has its origins in the 'curve stitch' activities invented by Mary Everest Boole at the end of the 19th century to make mathematical ideas more accessible to children. It was popularised as a decorative craft in the late 1960s through kits and books.
There is a printable set of printable templates to go with this activity.
