Saturday 27th July. The programme was to leave Wolverhampton at 9:00am, arrive at Ennerdale at 1:00pm, pitch camp at 2:00pm, do tracking at 4:00pm, have the evening meal, go to the tuck shop, have a camp training session at 9:00pm and a wide game at 10:30pm, followed by supper.
At 8:30am all the Scouts going on summer camp met at the Scout hut to load the rest of the equipment onto the coach. At about 9:15am we all got on the coach and left Wolverhampton for the start of the 1985 summer camp at Ennerdale in the Lake District. On the way the coach was full except for a couple of seats at the back, which had rucksacks on them because they would not fit in the boot. The journey would take about four hours, so someone suggested that we play a card game.
On the way to camp we stopped at a service station for about half an hour. When we nearly got to the campsite the coach could not get down one little track that led to the campsite, so we had to carry our rucksacks about 200 yards. When we got to the campsite we put our rucksacks down, put up our tents and went to the sites where the patrol boxes had been picked from the PLs' walk-in store. We pitched the tent and laid the ground sheet out. We had our packed lunches.
After lunch we put the dining shelter up and put the cooking equipment underneath. Then we did tracking and learnt what the different signs were. We were sent on a tracking course and all the patrols got back about 5:00pm, just in time for the evening meal of pork chops, mixed vegetables, boiled potatoes and apple pie with custard.
We had about two hours to cook the tea and wash up. At about 9:15pm we gathered around the flag pole for camp training. The weather was too bad to do this outside, so the leaders made something up around the home log. At about 10:00pm we had a wide game which involved catching up with bottles and the aim was to find the Ventures and squirt them with water.
