Night Hike

The weather was bound to ruin records. The number of records we took along was down due to the absence of Adrian Kelly who couldn't come. We were David Ashken, Neil Quinton, Andrew Quinton, Robert Bood, Phillip Oram, Andrew Darnes, Mark Evans, Andrew Powell and myself.

We all arrived down the Scout hut at 10:00pm except Philip Clemens who arrived at about 10:05. The food was already packed away in the boot, so we just had to put our rucksacks in the boot. It is lucky for us that Adrian didn't come with us because the two records at the back were taken up by the rucksacks. We got our good-byes and set out.

The journey was made less monotonous with some of Nigel's hyper remarks which were impossible to write out. About half way we stopped for lunch. It was in a lay-by with plenty of insects. Across the road from this field was a youth hostel that you were near but I don't know it. We had to get back into the bus because we had an outbreak of hay fever.

After a few ghost stories we waited to be told John came up the stairs in his ghost suit and made us jump. He told us to get some doughnuts and we couldn't have the tape.

When we woke up the next morning we had a traditional make our breakfast which consisted of eggs, bacon, bread, cornflakes and a cup of tea. The tea was more like coffee because Andrew Powell had put a wet packet of tea into a small pot. After breakfast we had to wash up.

When the washing up was finished we went on a show around the castle. We discovered that in the room Nigel and Neil had been sleeping in contained a damp patch. This was called an oubliette. This was the place where escaped or hoping war captives they just left them to rot. The room was chosen because the wall was French and it runs to the fireplace.
