Once everybody had arrived at the campsite, some taking much longer than others, we raised the flag for the first time. After all the campers had changed into camping gear out of Scout uniform, the two minibuses were unloaded. Then the patrols set about pitching tents and organising their patrol sites. Once this was done we all ate our packed lunches and then spent the rest of the afternoon making gadgets and continuing to organise the patrol sites.

Although the weather was not boiling hot, the majority of the Scouts decided to go for a swim and get some made raft out. However, with only a few minutes gone, simultaneously Andrew Adey and Andrew Bates decided to sit on opposite ends of it. This resulted in the raft splitting up and the rest of the swimming session went by splashing about.

After swimming, the patrols cooked and ate their first camp meal which was pork chops, mixed vegetables, potatoes, apple pie and custard. The evening was spent by the majority of people listening to a local patrol camp training talk, which was attended by all including the PLs, and was done by Bosun. It dealt with camp hygiene and how to care for cooking equipment. After this session the PLs departed from the training talks and set about spending the rest of the week. Presumably the rest of the Scouts attended more training sessions.

After a supper of cheese, biscuits and cocoa we all went to bed for the first time at Rudyard Lake.

As usual for the first morning at any camp we were all up reasonably early and the patrols and leaders set about cooking breakfast. Mr and Mrs Quinton were the invited guests of the troop and we helped to divide up the food. Once the breakfast of cornflakes, bacon and egg and beans had been eaten we had flag break.
