Wheathill Youth Hostel, Malthouse Farm
We met at the Scout hut at 8:00 o'clock. When No. 1 came we walked down to the bus stop on the Cannock Road. We caught a Midland Red bus. It took us to the bus station next to the British Rail station. We waited for a bus to take us to Bridgnorth. We got to High Town in Bridgnorth and were split in two and given a map and compass between us. Every so often each group led us. Halfway there the PLs went another way and the rest of the Scouts went with Nick No. 1, Lockson and Bates.
In a field they had a big tanker, so one of the Scouts climbed up the ladder but it started to fall to bits. We found a number plate in a bush, so we tied it to a rucksack on the back.
We got to the hostel first. When the others got there we saw some cats and a bull. In the hostel we chose our bunkbeds. We chose the top ones before the others arrived. Then we had a cup of tea. When the others arrived we played some games and then had tea. For tea we had chops, peas, carrots and mashed potatoes. For pudding we had rice pudding.
After that we went upstairs to look at a hole by the loos. One of the Scouts held on to a brick, then some bricks fell on the floor. Then we had a game of cards and spoons. The bench kept falling over and we nearly broke our backs. Then the shop opened. Most of us bought bars and bags of Mars and ate them. Then we played darts and read books. Then we had our supper, which was cream crackers and cheese.
After that we went to bed. In the night Peter Cheeze was sick so he had to move to a bottom bunk. In the morning Michael Peters did not hear his alarm go off because he had to cook breakfast. I got a good job. I was awake to wake him up. For breakfast we first had Weetabix, then egg, sausages, tomatoes, bread and a cup of tea. Then we packed our rucksacks and put our sheets, sleeping bags and blankets in the cupboard.
Then No. 1 and Bates made the lunch and we each had an apple to put in our rucksacks. We had a last game of darts, then we got ready for the walk. The shop opened again and we bought sweets and cans of pop. We started our walk. While we were walking we could hear shooting. Then we came to the crossroads and did not know which way to go, so we went straight ahead. When we turned into a field for lunch, on the road next to the gate there was a frog, dead.
After a rest we split into groups. The trail was very muddy and thick. We crossed fields and rivers until we got to the town where we had to meet. We had a thick piece of bread with cheese and an apple, and some cake. Then we played a game of oil tankers. No. 1 had some matches and we had to give him the match he had when he gave us the match. We had a piece of paper and had to give it to No. 1 to win.
At 2 to 5 the bus arrived to take us to Kidderminster. At Kidderminster we caught another bus to Birmingham. In Birmingham we went to the railway station. Michael Peters was left on the other side, so we had to go and get him. We went on platform 4A, then the train came. The train was called the Leicestershire Guardian. We got on the train and it took us to Wolverhampton. In Wolverhampton we got on the bus and it took us home. By John Rowley.
