Can you memorise this picture?

You have a few minutes after which the projector will be turned off. You should then draw the picture in the back of your exercise book.

  • Transum,

  • This activity is particularly effective when pupils are working in pairs. The discussion generated usually includes many mathematical concepts.

Another teaching idea is for pupils to sit in pairs, one with their back to the whiteboard. The second pupil describes the shape for the first to draw.

  • I thought it was a great idea but because they are never going to get it perfect the students felt negative after it. Also some said parts were correct when they had misscounted or failed to count the number of sides so missconceptions in some cases were reinforced.

Note to teacher: Doing this activity once with a class helps students develop strategies. It is only when they do this activity a second time that they will have the opportunity to practise those strategies. That is when the learning is consolidated. Click the button below to regenerate another version of this starter. You can choose the number of shapes in the picture (though some shapes may be hidden behind others).

Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

Transum.org/go/?Start=September4

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Laptops In Lessons

Here is the URL which will take them to a student version of this activity.
