We have heard from the locals that Scouts camping at Great Tower claim to have heard strange music late at night. One explanation is that in 1623 when the Scots and the English were constantly engaged in battle over the national border a small clan of Scots were cut off from their countrymen and fled to the hills of the Lake District to hide. They were found by the locals on Tower Rock where they were besieged for 32 days until they died of starvation and exposure. The last surviving member of the clan was the pipe major who would play his bagpipes at night in a desperate attempt to call for help from Scotland. His playing gradually deteriorated until he died with his pipes still in his arms.
Occasionally on a cold night the echoes of his playing can be heard as the notes reverberate through the trees from many years ago.
