  • F. Ricciardi, The Charter School, South London

  • I agree numbers change a too quickly. Not even enough time for them to jot them down before they change. Great idea though!!
  • Colin MacKay., Carnoustie High School.

  • Is anyone going to do anything about the numbers changing so quickly.
Surely it can't be that difficult.
    Questions are brilliant, thanks.
  • Transum,

Answers

The temperature and times given are current (live) data so we are unable to provide answers to all of the questions.

1. Which city is currently the warmest?
Probably Bangkok but it depends on the current conditions.

3. What is the range of temperatures?
Take the coldest temperature from the warmest.

5. What is the time difference between Birmingham and Bangkok?.
Seven hours in the winter and six hours in the summer (daylight saving time)

7. It takes 11 hours to fly from Bangkok to Birmingham. If you take off at midday from Bangkok, what time will you arrive in Birmingham (local time)?
4pm. Though there is currently no direct flight from Bangkok to Birmingham!

2. What is the mean (average) temperature of these four cities?
Add up the temperatures then divide by four.

4. Estimate the temperatures inside and outside your classroom right now.
The inside temperature is probably about 23o C (if you are feeling comfortable).

09:30 though this might be affected at different times of the year by daylight saving time. Does anyone know?

Depending on the definition of a city! Let us know what you think here.

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Student Activity

There are now extensive weather records for recent years available on the Internet. Students could find this data, organise it, apply their knowledge of probability and produce their own weather forecast for the next week.

Here are some examples of the data that can be easily used in students' projects:

Alternatively the level of air pollution in cities around the world might make a good topic for investigation. Data showing the AQI (Air Quality Index) is available at AQIcn.org.
