Mathematicians are not the people who find Maths easy; they are the people who enjoy how mystifying, puzzling and hard it is. Are you a mathematician?

Comment recorded on the 23 September 'Starter of the Day' page by Judy, Chatsmore CHS:

"This triangle starter is excellent. I have used it with all of my ks3 and ks4 classes and they are all totally focused when counting the triangles."

Comment recorded on the 2 April 'Starter of the Day' page by Mrs Wilshaw, Dunsten Collage,Essex:

"This website was brilliant. My class and I really enjoy doing the activites."

Each month a newsletter is published containing details of the new additions to the Transum website and a new puzzle of the month.

The newsletter is then duplicated as a podcast which is available on the major delivery networks. You can listen to the podcast while you are commuting, exercising or relaxing.

Transum breaking news is available on Twitter @Transum and if that's not enough there is also a Transum Facebook page.

Without Lifting

Without Lifting

Can you draw these diagrams without lifting your pencil from the paper? This is an interactive version of the traditional puzzle. Some diagrams are possible while others are not. What is the rule?

Numeracy

"Numeracy is a proficiency which is developed mainly in Mathematics but also in other subjects. It is more than an ability to do basic arithmetic. It involves developing confidence and competence with numbers and measures. It requires understanding of the number system, a repertoire of mathematical techniques, and an inclination and ability to solve quantitative or spatial problems in a range of contexts. Numeracy also demands understanding of the ways in which data are gathered by counting and measuring, and presented in graphs, diagrams, charts and tables."

Go Maths

Learning and understanding Mathematics, at every level, requires learner engagement. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. Sometimes traditional teaching fails to actively involve students. One way to address the problem is through the use of interactive activities and this web site provides many of those. The Go Maths main page links to more activities designed for students in upper Secondary/High school.

More on Enlargements including lesson Starters, visual aids, investigations and self-marking exercises.

The phrase Blow Up has two meanings. It could me to enlarge as in “please blow up this photograph to A3 size” but it could also mean to explode. Both meanings are used in this challenge.

In Mathematics, when a shape (object) is enlarged, the position of the enlargement (image) is determined by the position of the centre of enlargement. Think of a torch (flashlight) being held at the centre of enlargement shining on the shape and casting a shadow behind it. The position of the shadow will change as the torch moves.

The objective of this challenge is to find all the dots on the grid which could possibly be the centre of enlargement if the image can be drawn completely on the grid. You will see and hear an explosion if the image created breaks out of the grid.

It is recommended the simpler Enlargements exercise (part of the Transformations exercise) is completed before taking on this challenge.

Answers to this exercise are available lower down this page when you are logged in to your Transum account. If you don’t yet have a Transum subscription one can be very quickly set up if you are a teacher, tutor or parent.

Enlargements

Before attempting this challenge you should already be good at drawing enlargements (part of the Transformations exercise). Below is an excerpt from the help video created for the Transformations exercise.
